Fontevivo owes its name to the numerous karst springs that used to be in the area; its historical importance is due to the Cistercian abbey founded in 1142 by the Monastery of Chiaravalle della Colomba under the protection of the Pallavicino family.

The church is all that remains today of the original Romanesque structure except for the facade, which was restored in the 1400s. A niche situated in the right aisle houses an enthroned Madonna with the Child that has been attributed to Benedetto Antelami’s workshop.
